Adopt-a-School Foundation
The Foundation was initiated to bring about an effective change in the education environment in South Africa, and to create an environment that is conducive to learning and teaching. The Foundation acts as a vehicle that assists individuals and corporates to invest effectively in Education in South Africa. This is done via the process of adoption.
Education – the state of play in 2010
- The 2007 National Education Infrastructure Management System of the DoE shows that of 24 929 schools assessed in South Africa:
- only 7882, or 31.6 % have municipal flush toilets and more than 1000 schools have no toilet facilities at all
- only 37.8% or 9435 schools are served by a municipal water connection in the school yard and 2500 schools have NO water supply on the premises
- only 2482, less than 10 % of all schools in SA have a stocked science laboratory
- just fewer than 15% of all schools in SA have no electricity
- less than 10 of schools in SA have stocked computer centres
- less than 7.5% have a stocked library
- only 1 in 5 children in Grade 5 can read on a grade 5 level
- An independent study in school safety in 2007 showed that only 23% of learners feel safe while they are at school
- Less than half of all learners who enter grade 10 go on to complete matric, and the Department of Education estimates that the first year university throughput is not 40%
These statistics show that South Africa’s education system is still largely crippled by the discrepancies of the past. These inequalities and inadequacies need to be addressed in order to ensure positive learning experiences that can only be gained from an environment conducive to learning and teaching.
