Fundraising Activities
In addition to sourcing adopters for schools, we regularly host a number of successful fundraising activities that assist us in our effort to reach additional schools. We are grateful to all our various funders who support these fundraising activities.
Community Upliftment and Involvement
One of the main objectives of the Foundation is to involve the surrounding community in the interventions that improve their school/s. When the Foundation has secured an adopter for a school, we involve the community in the construction and skills development process. Both skilled and unskilled parents and community members work as volunteers and become involved in construction of buildings, training as librarians, establishing and maintaining vegetable gardens and other volunteer activities.
Job Creation
The Foundation believes strongly in the empowerment of the communities that we work in. Along with skills development of surrounding communities, we are committed to create temporary jobs and to empower small and medium enterprises (SMEs) within these communities.
We have created 2440 temporary jobs in the last 10 years. While these jobs are temporary, the skills transferred ensure that members of local communities can become skilled bricklayers, painters, etc. In some cases, we have seen that the skills transfer offered by the Foundation has led to more permanent income generating enterprises that have evolved following our interventions in some schools.
Skills Development
Every project initiated is subject to a resource requirement. A skills audit is conducted in each community to maximize employment opportunities when the project is implemented. More often, local people are paired with skilled workers in order to promote effective skills development and transfer, thus improving the employment prospects of local people.
We have been pleasantly amazed at the abundance of nearly all the skills needed for the construction of schools in all the communities where our adopted schools are located. Flowing from this very positive strength is a great opportunity to deepen the skills pool and business acumen of the people the Foundation has worked with in a number of communities.
Morale booster
Ad-hoc evaluations conducted on the impact of our work have revealed that the morale of learners, educators and parents in the adopted schools is lifted once there are improvements in the school environment. We are excited to notice that in most of our schools the educators have improved their attendance and regained enthusiasm for their work, while learner attendance has improved and enthusiasm is generated for Saturday or holiday classes.
Other schools have ascribed improved academic performance to the changing environment, while learners have developed a sense of responsibility and are more conscious about cleanliness of their school.
Volunteer Programme
The Adopt-a-School Foundation affords those who wish to offer of their time or expertise to volunteer in schools a place to achieve their goal. We provide several areas in which one can become involved in schools in your area.
Alumni Programme
The Foundation encourages former pupils of our adopted schools to become involved with fundraising, or volunteering for their Alma Maters.
