Olifantsvlei Primary School
Olifantsvlei primary school is a school situated on the Southern side of Johannesburg in an area called Eikenhof. The school started operating in the early 60s in a cowshed. It was predominantly initiated for the children of the black employees of the Johannesburg City Council. All the classrooms and one toilet block were built from donations. Only the computer room and two other toilet blocks were built by the Gauteng Department of Education.
The school is catering for children from rural farming communities and informal settlements. Majority of the parents are either unemployed or doing piece jobs and earning subsistence type of an income.
The property or land which the school is built on still belongs to the Johannesburg City now called the Johannesburg Metro. The very property has been leased to Moses Maren Mission from September 1994 for a fixed period of 20 years i.e. until 2014.
During the time when the Gauteng Department of Education was in the process of ensuring that all farms school become state schools on state land, the Moses Maren Mission agreed to detach Olifantsvlei primary and Moses Maren Technical secondary school from the leash. This is evidence building of computer rooms and toilets for both schools whereby the Moses Maren Mission never interfered. The councilor Mr Dan Bovu is the best person to attest that.
